The Assessment Phase

If entitlement is granted, VAC determines the degree of disability and the benefit payable.

Entitlement and assessment are separate decisions. A favourable entitlement decision does not, by itself, determine the disability assessment or the amount of compensation.

Understand what is being assessed

VAC assesses the severity and impact of the entitled condition under its applicable Table of Disabilities and policies.

Describe functional impact

Explain how the condition affects daily activities, work, sleep, relationships, mobility, concentration and independence. Be specific and use real examples.

Complete forms carefully

Answer every relevant question accurately. If a question does not fit your circumstances, explain why rather than leaving the reader to guess.

Review the assessment letter

Check the percentage, effective date, conditions assessed, reasons and review options. Keep a copy of everything submitted.

Keep in mind: This guide is general information, not legal advice. Verify current requirements, available procedures and deadlines with VAC, VRAB or a qualified representative.
