The Full VAC Claims Process

Understand the journey, prepare your evidence, and know what options may be available at each stage. Every claim is different, and not every claim follows exactly the same path.

A disability claim generally involves two main decisions: first, whether the condition is connected to service (entitlement); and, if entitlement is granted, how the condition is assessed (assessment). If you disagree with a decision, review or appeal options may be available.

1

Prepare and submit

Gather your service history, medical information, diagnosis, supporting statements and any relevant exposure or incident details. Keep copies of everything you submit and record dates and contact details.

2

Entitlement decision

VAC considers whether the evidence and applicable rules establish the required relationship between your disability and your service. Clear service details and relevant medical evidence can help VAC understand your claim.

3

Disability assessment

If entitlement is granted, VAC assesses the extent of the entitled disability using the applicable assessment rules and information. Review the decision carefully to understand the assessment and the evidence considered.

4

Understand the decision

Read the full decision letter. Identify the findings, evidence relied on, reasons for the decision, and any instructions or deadlines for seeking a review or appeal. Keep the envelope and correspondence if relevant, and confirm applicable deadlines promptly.

Seek help or challenge a decision

If a decision is unfavourable, ask a qualified representative about the available options. Depending on the decision and circumstances, options may include a departmental review, assistance from the Bureau of Pensions Advocates, or an application to the Veterans Review and Appeal Board (VRAB). Routes, eligibility and time limits vary.
