What to Expect

A practical overview of the steps and decisions you may encounter.

Every claim is different. Processing times and evidence requirements vary, and a claim may require follow-up information or move through more than one decision stage.

1. Prepare and submit

Identify the condition and gather the information available. Use VAC's current forms and submission instructions. Start with the evidence checklist and personal statement guide.

2. VAC reviews the evidence

VAC may review service and medical records and may ask for more information. Respond by the deadline where possible; if you need more time, contact VAC promptly.

3. Entitlement decision

VAC decides whether the condition qualifies as service-related under the applicable rules.

4. Assessment decision

If entitlement is granted, VAC assesses the degree of disability and related benefit.

5. Review options if needed

If you disagree, read the decision letter and promptly seek advice about available review or appeal routes and deadlines.

Keep in mind: This guide is general information, not legal advice. Verify current requirements, available procedures and deadlines with VAC, VRAB or a qualified representative.
