About Red Zone

A place to pause, check the record and get support when a claim feels stuck or overwhelming.

This page uses “Red Zone” as a practical warning stage: your claim has stalled, the decision is difficult to understand, important evidence may have been missed, or you are unsure what to do next. It is not an official VAC status or program.

Recognize the warning signs

You have received no meaningful update for a long time, a decision seems to overlook evidence, or you do not understand what VAC needs from you.

Make a one-page status summary

Record the date submitted, current stage, last contact, outstanding requests, key evidence and the specific question that needs an answer.

Ask a focused question

Contact VAC or your representative and ask what is outstanding, who must act next, and whether any deadline applies.

Escalate carefully

If the issue remains unresolved, ask a qualified representative about the appropriate complaint, review or appeal route. Keep a record of all contacts.

Protect your wellbeing

A long claim can be exhausting. Ask a trusted person or veteran support organization to help you organize the next step.

Keep in mind: This guide is general information, not legal advice. Verify current requirements, available procedures and deadlines with VAC, VRAB or a qualified representative.
